Hybrid Support Equipment

In order to use the RATT Works Hybrid Motor systems, you will need suitable equipment for remote filling the nitrous tank in the motor and then initiating ignition. We are now stocking two systems from Pratt Hobbies to do the job.

The top of the range system is the Remote Tanking and Launching System (RTLS) which can also be used for launching conventional solid motors. This system incorporates twin solenoid valves so that the motor can be dumped in the case of a misfire. However, the H and I motors will vent off a full tank of oxidiser in a few minutes through the vent built into the motor itself, and Pratt Hobbies have designed the economy MiniTanker System to fill motors of this size, where a separate launch control system is available. This system only has one solenoid valve (the most expensive parts of the system) for filling the tank. Obviously a system with fill and dump valves is to be preferred, but for motors up to I impulse, the Mini tanker provides a very affordable entry into hybrid powered flights. Please note that the Mini Tanker is a fuelling system only....you will need a separate launch controller to ignite the motor.

The Pratt Hobbies RTLS (Remote Tanking and Launching System) is the most versatile launch controller available. Since it is based on the SureFire System, it can be used to launch conventional rockets as well as tanking and firing RATT Works hybrid motors. The RTLS comes with a built-in rechargeable ni-cd battery, and the relay circuitry means that maximum current is delivered to the igniter, making it ideal for clusters. A transistorized continuity check circuit sounds a buzzer to indicate a complete circuit through the igniter, and will not set off a flashbulb or electric match.  The ignition cable uses alligator clips that connect to plugs on the cable, so they are easily removed for cleaning. A spare set of clips is included in a parts container in the lid of the RTLS box. We also include a prewired bulb tester that allows you to test both solenoid control circuits as well as the firing circuit.

The RTLS includes two solenoid valves and hardware, configured so that one valve fills the motor and the other dumps the oxidizer out of the motor in the event of a misfire. These solenoid valves are custom made to Pratt Hobbies specifications, and will not burn out with prolonged use, unlike "hot rod" valves that are only designed for a few moments of action. The output of the fill valve is connected to a pressure fitting that accepts the 1/8 inch flexible line used by the RATT Works H70 and I70 motors. Fittings are included for the larger fill tubing used by the RATT Works K240 motor.

The Mini Tanker System

The Pratt Hobbies MiniTanker System has been developed as a low cost hybrid fuelling system for use when a separate launch control system is available. By taking out the battery, ignition circuitry and one of the solenoid valves (the most expensive part of hybrid support systems) the MiniTanker can be sold at a very affordable price. The Minitanker only requires a two-conductor cable, one button, and some electronics to protect the solenoid valve, all of which is built into the spool used to store the 100-foot cable. The valve head uses a custom-made 12v valves, and the medical-grade brass fittings used in the RTLS. We also use a Sure-Lok connector on the valve output, so you don't need a pressure fitting on the tank end of your fill line; just slip the bare end into the Sure-Lok.
